Air-purifying respirators use filters, cartridges or cannisters to provide protection by preventing harmful gases, vapours, aerosols (droplet and solid particles), or a combination of contaminants from entering the respiratory system. These respirators do not supply oxygen and therefore can’t be used in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere where the oxygen levels are below 19.5% or where the environment is immediately dangerous to life or health. The appropriate respirator for particular hazards will depend on the environmental contaminants.
