In this article, we will discuss the new eyewear safety standards in South Africa. Safety eyewear sold within South Africa is now subject to EN166 (SABS adoption: SANS 50166:2018) The South African standard has adopted the European standard. This is easily identified by the EN-standard number (EN166) being changed to the prefix SANS 50- (SANS 50166)
There have been multiple standards for personal eye-protection products in the past. These multiple standards have led to confusion about compliance. Some questionable manufacturers and distributors brought their products onto the South African market with no regard for standards. This has potentially exposed users to eye strain or damage due to inferior quality. And with little recourse for reputable suppliers.
This has changed. The standard for eyewear safety which has been adopted conforms to EN166. The standard is detailed and comprehensive. Markings can be found on both the lenses and frames. These markings describe the tests and levels passed.
Eyewear safety standards now require markings on both the lenses and frames
Markings found on the lenses include:

- UV, sun glare and IR infrared filters
- lens shades
- Identification of the manufacturer
- Optical class – this refers to the optical clarity (and therefore no distortion)
- Symbol for mechanical strength – shows what speed of impact the lens can withstand
Optional marks:

- Molten metal and hot solids resistance
- Resistance to surface damage by fine particles
- Resistance to fogging
The optional marks are not required by the standard. The manufacturer would have to pay to have these additional tests done, and get their product certified. Therefore, these markings can give the user assurance of the product being suitable for their work environment, and that it has been tested and proved as such.
All of the above are marked on the lenses. This makes it easier for end-users, managers and resellers to identify, supply, and use the correct product for the application, with one glance.
The frames will also have markings to indicate:
- Identification of the manufacturer
- Number of the EN standard
- Application areas (refer to diagram)
- Resistance to high speed particles (Mechanical strength)
This eye protection standard empowers users, purchasers and resellers. Now you can know that the eyewear being used has been tested and certified to do what you need it to do, and to the level you need it done.
How can you make sure you are achieving compliance with the eyewear safety standards:
- Identify the EN markings on the lens and frame of the product
- Request the independent test result (EN Test Certificate) from the manufacturer. Keep this on record
