On Thursday, 12 October 2023, at Signa Artisans-in-Motion in Boksburg, we hosted a welding competition that brought together some of the most skilled welders in Johannesburg. This event was generously sponsored by 3M, leaders in welding personal protective equipment. Contestants demonstrated their proficiency in three welding techniques: Overlap weld, Butt weld, and T-fillet weld, using MIG, Stick Welder, and Tig Welder equipment.
Marc Husselman, Business Development Manager from 3M, demonstrated the key features of the Speedglas G5-01 welding helmet to all contestants.
SPARK WARS Welding Skills Competition Details

📍 Venue: Artisans in Motion Skills Training Centre, Anchor Industrial Park, Unit C3, Cnr Springbok & Taljaard Rd, Bartlett Ext 7, Jet Park, Boksburg.
The SPARK WARS Welding Skills Competition required contestants to demonstrate their abilities in:
- Overlap weld
- Butt weld
- T-fillet weld
using equipment such as MIG, Stick Welder, and Tig Welder across three progressive knockout rounds.
1st Place:
The top honors went to Sello Tlebere, who showcased exceptional skill and precision in the art of welding. Sello took home the grand prize, “ARTISAN IN A BOX”. His dedication and craftsmanship truly set him apart from the competition.
2nd Place:
In second place, we had Cole Pienaar, who impressed the judges with his welding expertise. His hard work and determination were evident in his performance, and he received the runner up prize of Rebel Thermotrak Hi Safety Boots.
Throughout the competition, we witnessed incredible feats of welding artistry. The precision, creativity, and attention to detail displayed by all participants were truly inspiring. The competition not only celebrated welding skills but also highlighted the importance of craftsmanship in this field.
SPARK WARS welding skills competition was a resounding success, and we want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and participants. Competition Rules:
Participants are expected to:
- Participate in a health and safety briefing at the onset and ensure compliance throughout the event.
- Understand that late arrivals won’t be granted extra time.
- Begin and conclude tasks as directed by the judges.
- Refrain from disrupting peers or conversing with attendees during the competition.
- Seek approval from the Event Manager before leaving the competition vicinity.
- Abide by the Event Manager’s instructions during any unforeseen power outage or accident.
- Not expect extra time if they damage equipment.
- Work safely, failing which they may be asked to stop.
Judges, representing diverse sectors, will evaluate the competition based on predefined criteria.
Terms and Conditions
1. Eligibility:
1.1 SPARK WARS (the “Competition”) is open to individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Must be over age of 18 at the time of entry.
- Must have previous welding experience.
2. Entry Period:
2.1 The Competition entry will open as published on the website from time to time.
3. How to Enter:
3.1 Entrants must register online during the Entry Period. Should an entrant not have access to the online registration page, arrangements can be made for a printed registration form to be delivered, on request and subject to schedules.
4. Prize:
4.1 The prize for the Competition will be published closer to entry period.
4.2 The prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash or an alternative prize.
5. Winner Selection:
5.1 The winner will be selected by judges decision.
5.2 The winner will be announced on the day of the competition.
5.3 If the winner is not present at the time of the announcement, the prize will be allocated to the next runner up.
6. Publicity:
6.1 By entering the Competition, entrants grant the company and sponsors, the right to use their name, likeness, and submitted content for promotional purposes without additional compensation.
7. Privacy:
7.1 Information collected from entrants will be used only for the purpose of the Competition and in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
8. Disqualification:
8.1 Delta Health and the sponsors reserve the right to disqualify any entrant who violates these terms and conditions or engages in fraudulent or inappropriate conduct.
9. Limitation of Liability:
9.1 Delta Health and sponsors are not responsible for any loss, damage, or injury incurred as a result of participating in the Competition or accepting the prize.
10. Governing Law:
10.1 These terms and conditions are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of South Africa.
11. Modification or Termination:
11.1 Delta Health and Safety, and sponsors reserve the right to modify or terminate the Competition at any time for any reason.
