Reusable bodily protection in the form of suits requires the wearer to decontaminate the suit after every use.
Protection Types
Protective coveralls designed for hazardous applications undergo rigorous testing. This testing certifies and allocates them to one of 6 different types depending on the protection required for an application.
1. Type 1 – Gas tight
2. Type 2 – Non-gas tight
3. Type 3 – Liquid Jet Protection
4. Type 4 – Liquid Spray Protection
5. Type 5 – Hazardous Particulate Protection
6. Type 6 – Liquid Splash Protection
Materials
The materials used in protective coveralls define the level of protection they offer. Specific material protection increases with anti-static treatment which is particularly important working in flammable chemical environments.
Non-Woven Polypropylene
While this material offers comfort and breathability, it is unsuitable for hazardous applications. Non-woven polypropylene protects against non-hazardous liquids and dust.
Spunbond-Meltblown Polypropylene (SMS)
The level of protection offered by this material is dependent on how it is layered. As a standard, it provides breathable wear and an effective barrier against dust and particular liquid splashes.
Spunbond-meltblown polypropylene is suitable for treatment to increase splash protection.
Microporous Laminates
These materials offer less breathability than polypropylene derivatives. However, they provide a higher level of liquid splash protection
Non-Microporous Laminates
These materials are the least breathable of protective coveralls. The benefit of non-microporous laminates is that they provide the highest level of liquid protection.
Disposable Polypropylene Coveralls
Certain protective coveralls are suitable for lighter duty applications. Polypropylene coveralls are an economical option. However, they do not offer protection from fine particulates.
Polypropylene coveralls are sufficient if you require bodily protection in janitorial applications such as light-duty cleaning or warehousing. However, if you are dealing with hazardous material applications, type 5 and type 6 options are more appropriate.
Type 5 and Type 6 Protective Disposable Coveralls
Coveralls that fall into these categories offer protection from hazardous material. They protect from light sprays, liquid chemical splashes, contact with fine particulates and electrostatic dissipation.
While polypropylene options may seem more economical in comparison, they offer less protection.
Type 5 and 6 disposable coveralls are effective for use in many applications.
