Retractable fall arrester blocks are recommended where workers need greater mobility and consistent fall arrest performance over changing working positions, such as on platforms, scaffolding or vertical structures. Unlike fixed‑length lanyards, retractable blocks automatically adjust the working length and lock quickly in the event of a fall, helping to reduce free‑fall distance and impact forces on the body harness. They are available in different configurations, including webbing mini‑blocks and GI wire rope units, to suit specific site conditions and anchorage layouts.

Full body harnesses and fall arrester blocks should be inspected before each use by the wearer and at regular intervals by a competent person, following the manufacturer’s recommendations and site safety procedures. Pre‑use checks typically include verifying webbing and stitching integrity, checking hardware (D‑rings, buckles, hooks), confirming that fall indicators on harnesses have not been activated, and ensuring that retractable blocks run smoothly and lock correctly. Any equipment that shows signs of damage, has been involved in a fall, or fails inspection must be removed from service and replaced or assessed by an authorised technician.
